Why Store Downloads/Images in the database?

I have thought about this topic for a while now. I think it will be better to store these items in the file system rather than the database, mainly because file system space is a lot cheaper than database space as far as ISPs are concerned! Files that need to be stored in the database can be in a generic digital download table with support for moving files in and out of the database instead.

We will be moving towards this goal in later releases...

This problem will be resolved with SQL Server 2008:

FileStream data
The SQL Server FileStream object allows large binary data to be stored in the file system yet remain an integral part of the database with transactional consistency. This enables the scale out of large binary data to be managed by the database and yet stored on more cost-effective storage and file systems.
